Hello friend! My name is Amy. I am so happy you have stopped by ✨ If you are new here, a warm welcome to you! This space is where I meander through midlife, connecting to my true self through the seasonal shifts and simpler living, and seeking my inner wise woman. If you are also on this path and looking for someone to walk gently beside you, I see you and am here. Let’s color outside the lines together.
The Autumnal Equinox marks a true yin and yang of the year. Tomorrow, September 22, 2025, at 1:19 pm, the sun shines directly over the equator, so day and night are equal again. There are only two times of year this happens, now and at the Spring Equinox—the beginning and ending of the growing season. It is also the beginning of Libra season, and her scales are balancing us.
It is the second harvest festival after Lugnasadh on August 1st. It is the time in the cycle when the goddess begins her transition from mother to crone, preparing to guide the world into the darker part of the year. The light of the growing season is fading slowly each day, a little more into darkness and hibernation. The world is alive around us as every creature is preparing for winter. It is a busy time of clearing up and hurriedly completing tasks on our property, not just for winter, but readying it for the season beyond, when the light returns. It is a time for celebration and giving thanks.
Harvest and Thanksgiving truly take on a different meaning when you are so connected to the source of your food. Did you know that the original Thanksgiving celebrations took place the last week in September, or at the latest, the first week in October, when harvest was virtually finished? It wasn't until Abraham Lincoln was president that the current holiday of Thanksgiving was initiated.
The Equinox also takes on the name of Mabon, which comes from Welsh lore. The ritualistic process is lovely. It encourages reflection, focusing on our connections to those around us and what our personal harvests have been. It is peppered with families together telling stories of the generations before, collecting and decorating our homes with fall beauty, and consuming the seasonal sweets provided by nature, namely apples. The apple itself is considered a symbol of beauty, life, immortality, and healing. If you cut an apple in half around the center versus ‘stem to stern’, you will see a five-pointed star symbolizing the elements: earth, air, fire, water, and ether.
Five Ideas For Ushering in Fall
🧹Time for an Autumn clean. It can be a powerful release of old energy. Opening up your windows and airing out the house can release the stagnant air from the summer air conditioning. As the months grow darker, we find that we spend more time in our homes, so a deep clean and organization will welcome in this time.
🍁Decorate your home in the colors of fall. This doesn’t have to be expensive. Bring in fall flowers; goldenrod is a favorite of mine, and it is abundant this time of year. I also have a few inexpensive throw pillow covers in gold, orange, and navy, that I can switch out, which lend warmth to our living space.
🍎Bake with apples. Today I am going to try a new recipe for this apple tart.
🍲Make a fall simmer pot. The following is a tried and true recipe.
📘As this Equinox coincides with the New Moon, it is a time for introspection and new beginnings. Write down your intentions for this new season.
Have a happy equinox!
Until next time,
Great writing Amy! Love the description of the Equinox, Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate 🤝what we have and our success.👏👍🏻
I love the idea of this being a time of preparation for the coming season. Today I have been digging over vegetable beds on my allotment ready for winter
